Highland Park embraces the mission of reaching and teaching all learners. We currently serve approximately 400 students from preschool through sixth grade and strive to meet all students’ needs in meaningful and impactful ways. Our teaching teams meet regularly to review student outcomes, identifying opportunities for both remediation and enrichment. Highland Park uses Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and is a Well-Managed School (WMS). PBIS is a structure that
explicitly teaches and reinforces desired behaviors in common areas. Being a Well-Managed School means we embrace the whole child and approach behavioral needs just as we would academic needs. The Panda Pride Nature Preserve is a unique campus offering of which we are very proud! Through community partnerships and a lot of teamwork, the Panda Pride Nature Preserve now includes walking trails, two outdoor classrooms, a wetland viewing area, bird boxes, and native planting gardens installed by our students! Highland Park Elementary School, Bloomington’s West Kept Secret.
Highland Park students truly have an array of special area classes. In addition to art, library, music, and physical education, students receive instruction in Spanish and computer lab. Exposure to another language and the opportunity to explore computer science topics help prepare our students to develop
lifelong curiosity and a wider world view. We have clubs for drama, robotics, running, and basketball. The drama club produces three to four plays each year. Our running club is a great way to stay healthy, make new friends, and prepare for the annual MCCSC Fun Run. Our basketball club culminates with a tournament in the spring. We also have select students attend the First Tee of Indiana program every spring to learn golf skills from PGA professionals. Students can get involved in the Highland Park community via our student council and an annual talent show. Our student council has organized disaster relief fundraisers and puton their first student “dance” in the spring of 2019!
